Community guidelines
Burbline works when neighbours look out for each other. Short version: be kind, keep it local, keep it safe.
1. Be a good neighbour
- Be respectful. No harassment, bullying, hate speech or discrimination.
- Disagree about the issue, not the person.
2. Keep it local and real
- Post things that matter to your suburb and the ones around it.
- Use your real first name or a name neighbours will recognise. No impersonation.
- No spam, chain posts or repeated advertising. Local businesses: one clear post is fine.
3. Protect privacy
- Don’t share anyone’s home address, phone number, number plate or photos of them without consent.
- Don’t post your own home address — use a nearby street corner or park. Map pins are approximate on purpose.
- Don’t accuse named people of crimes. Report crime to police instead.
4. Buy, sell and give away safely
- Meet in a public place, inspect before paying, and never pay a deposit or bank transfer for something you haven’t seen.
- No weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco/vapes, prescription medicines, animals for sale, counterfeit or stolen goods, or anything illegal.
- Kerbside giveaways: follow your council’s rules and don’t block footpaths.
5. Lost & found
- Found a pet? Any vet or council animal shelter can scan for a microchip for free.
- Ask people to describe an item before handing it over.
- Mark alerts resolved once sorted, so neighbours stop looking.
6. Emergencies
- Life-threatening emergency: call 000.
- Non-urgent police matters: Police Assistance Line 131 444.
- Scams: report to Scamwatch.
7. Reporting and moderation
Use the flag button on any post, listing, alert, Lend a Hand request or message. Reported content is hidden for you straight away and goes to a moderator. Moderators may hide or remove content and suspend accounts that break these guidelines.
